In this month’s episode of Chat NDT with ASNT, host Debbie Segor, CAE, has an in-depth conversation with ASNT’s Faces of NDT, Shauna Kagan and Brent Moulton. (You can read more about the Faces of NDT in a previous blog post.) They share their experiences and perspectives on a variety of topics, including getting started in NDT, highlights from their careers, and getting the most out of ASNT membership. Here are some of the insights from the discussion.
On a typical NDT workday (or lack thereof):
Shauna: “That’s one of the things I love about NDT. I’m not one of those people who can just come in and do the same thing day after day […] I never know what my day is going to hold.”
The characteristics of a good NDT technician:
Brent: “If your lead comes on the floor and asks ‘Who can do this job here?’, always be that first person with their hand in the air saying ‘I’ll do it. Let’s go.’”
The importance of having, and being, a mentor:
Shauna: “It’s always fortunate when you have that person that’s been in an industry for 20, 30 years and they take time to share that with you […] that’s what I look to be throughout the rest of my career, is to help people the way that I was helped.”
On their most interesting experiences in NDT:
Brent: “Being shut down due to polar bear activity […] Up on the North Slope, they take safety very seriously, so once that polar bear was in the area they shut us down and made sure that all the crews remained safe, and allowed that polar bear to go on its natural way.”
