January 2022 cover of ASNT's publication Materials Evaluation. This cover features AE Testing and the main photo is of a technician in a hard had performing AE on a pipe near the top of a facility.

ASNT’s flagship monthly journal Materials Evaluation (ME) will kick off 2022 with a new look—and new content. In a bonus episode of Chat NDT with ASNT, host Debbie Segor, CAE, talks with ASNT Periodicals Editor Jill Ross about the ME redesign, changes to The NDT Technician (TNT) newsletter, and how to get involved with ASNT’s periodicals.

As part of their conversation, Jill shared some of the new content that’s going to debut in ME in 2022. Here are eight new features to look for in ME this year:

1. NDE Outlook

This new column, coordinated by ME Associate Technical Editor Ripi Singh, will provide an overview of the future of NDE and the “possibility thinking” driving the field forward. It will feature columns written by different thought leaders in the field.

2. Web Extras

Adjacent to the Table of Contents for the print journal will be a digital “contents” page that highlights recent content that readers may have missed on ASNT’s digital channels, including blog posts, on-demand webinars, podcasts, and videos.

3. Ethics Column

This column, which will debut in the March 2022 issue of ME, will be coordinated by Toni Bailey and feature ethical case studies designed for reader interaction. The column will be published in both the print journal and on ASNT Pulse, giving readers the opportunity to participate in the conversation in the comments section.

4. Certification Q&A

Formerly a regular feature in TNT, the Certification Q&A will feature reader questions about certification with answers from ASNT certification experts.

5. Member Profile

Another re-purposed feature originally from TNT, the new “At Work” feature will follow the format of TNT’s Practitioner Profile but broaden its scope to include researchers, academics, students, engineers, inventors, and any other member of ASNT with an interesting NDT story to tell!

A new feature in ASNT's Materials Evaluation is a column called At Work. January's featured technician is Natalie Rhoades.

6. NDT Snapshots

The last page of the redesigned ME will feature photographs sent in from readers showcasing how they are creating a safer world through their daily work. These photos will highlight the variety and interesting experiences available in NDT.

7. People Watch

This section will provide news updates about individuals, including promotions, staff updates, new certifications, and “in memoriam” features.

8. RNDE Abstracts

ASNT also publishes a research journal, Research in Nondestructive Evaluation (RNDE). Since this journal is available to subscribers only, this section will inform ME readers about the research being published in RNDE.
