On 10 September, the new reality competition television show Metal Shop Masters premiered on Netflix, showcasing contestants competing in metal fabrication challenges. The show is supported by the American Welding Society (AWS), and one of the judges is Stephanie Hoffman, Program Manager of Workforce Development at AWS.
The debut of this show got us wondering: what would an NDT-based reality show look like? We reached out to our followers on LinkedIn to hear their ideas. (Responses have been lightly edited for clarity and style.)
______
How about segments with contestants that are Level I, II, and III, with questions that pertain to their activities by NDT methods used (PT, MT, UT, etc.), at their level that they should know —Level III vs Level III, Level II vs Level II, Level I vs Level I contestants. Give them flaws, cracks, whatever indication applicable to methods used.

______
A show that covers all types of NDT where you get brought out to different locations in a van without windows. When you arrive, you are provided your tools and NDT device, a written practice document, and on the side is the number of reference materials to use.
I would be game for that!!!

What about NDT field inspection challenges, for example, samples with difficult defects to detect and presentation of the unknown cause of this defect. Something like evaluating the expertise of the inspector in the technique used.
It would be even more exciting if you use inspectors from different companies that are competition on the market in a specific area or place or country. 😉
If you want somebody for the casting job, count me in.

In my Honest opinion, before Reality TV show, a few documentaries of sorts should first be made to let people assimilate with what NDT is. It has been years that documentaries or TV shows are being made on heavy construction, fabrication and mega projects that now people understand fabrication and construction or even forging.
Documentaries may include NDT in industries that mesmerize the audience and are used by public in general such as heavy castings of railway, NDT in aviation, rail, bridges, monuments, etc.
After a few such documentaries, one can then start a reality TV show that will be inclusive of general public sparking keen interest in them.
